Dodge Nitro Tires
Offered from 2006 to 2012, the Dodge Nitro was a compact SUV that was available with rear-wheel-drive or part-time four-wheel drive. Nitros were strong-running and capable, with a choice of V6 engines and a tough, brawny image. Unfortunately, the Nitro never really clicked with the buying public and the model only lasted a few years before being displaced by the Journey crossover SUV in the Dodge lineup.
The Nitro had a lot of commonalities with the Jeep Liberty platform and was available with SXT, SLT, and R/T trim levels, with the R/T package boasting a 260 hp 4.0L V6 and 5-speed automatic. Inside, the Nitro was available with niceties like stain-repellent cloth or leather upholstery, 8-speaker premium audio, Load ‘n Go fold-flat cargo floor, fold-flat front passenger seat, parking assist, satellite radio, and more. The Nitro was not especially fuel efficient, with EPA ratings of 18 mpg city/22 mpg highway. It was succeeded in the Dodge lineup by the Journey and Jeep Cherokee.
At SimpleTire, we’ve rounded up the best Dodge Nitro tires, including all-season, all-terrain, and winter tires, using SimpleScore. Ready? Let’s get going:
1. Toyo Open Country A/T III - Best All-Terrain tire
No, the Dodge Nitro wasn’t a serious off-road SUV but select models had all-wheel-drive or part-time 4WD as an option, so it’s worth mentioning an all-terrain tire choice. The Toyo Open Country A/T III is designed for the traction and durability you need for off-road adventures in sand, snow, mud, or rocks without compromising on the low noise, responsive handling, good road manners, and comfortable ride you’d expect from an all-season tire. That might sound like too much to hope for, but the Toyo Open Country A/T III is that kind of all-terrain tire. Toyo engineered the Open Country A/T III with a polyester casing, two steel belts, and a spiral wrap polyamide cap layer, along with a tough cut-and-chip-resistant tread compound. It’s covered by a 65,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, which prompted us here at SimpleTire to give the Open Country A/T III a solid SimpleScore of 9.6 for longevity. The symmetric all-terrain tread delivers great grip with a high void ratio, easily shedding stones, mud, and debris so there’s always a clear section of tire to dig in. It’s also designed with an extra-deep tread for long wear as well as traction. The Toyo Open Country A/T III has the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service (SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction). Cornering, braking, and steering response are all surprisingly competent thanks to the shoulder design, sipe pattern, and stable internal construction of the Open Country A/T III for a SimpleScore of 9.3. All in all, the Toyo Open Country A/T III is a really solid overall choice for your Dodge Nitro, with performance that’s equally strong on or off paved surfaces.
2. Nokian Nordman 9 SUV Studded - Best Winter tire
Nokian is based in Finland (yes, the same parent company as Nokia phones), and they have long specialized in tires that can meet the demands of a tough Scandinavian winter. The US isn’t Finland, but there are still parts of the country that might regularly have several inches of snow and subfreezing temperatures that mean that snow will be on the roads and ground for days or weeks at a time. In instances like that, you have probably already found out you can’t depend on most all-season tires to reliably get the job done for you. The Nordman 9 SUV Studded from Nokian is a great choice in a winter tire that’s loaded with advanced features and next-generation performance. Nokian engineered the Nordman 9 SUV Studded with a specialized rubber formulation that’s designed for flexibility, enhanced traction in subfreezing weather, and an Aramid-reinforced sidewall for durability. Taking that into account, we give the Nordman 9 SUV Studded a SimpleScore of 9.4 for longevity. A directional tread design with deep grooves, Snow Claws, and sipes gives you the kind of traction you need to get through deep snow and slush with confidence. If you have to get through treacherous icy conditions, the Nordman 9 SUV Studded is available with studs installed (remember that studded tires are not legal in all states and only for certain months in others - check your state laws). We give the Nokian Nordman 9 SUV Studded a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. Cornering, control, and roadability are immediate and precise thanks to the reinforced sidewall and tread pattern – enough for a solid 9.0 SimpleScore for handling. You might also be interested in knowing that the Nordman 9 SUV Studded’s rubber compound is eco-friendly, with silica, canola oil, and natural rubber components, and is designed for low rolling resistance to save on fuel costs.
3. Nexen Roadian HTX2 - Best All-Weather tire
Next is the Nexen Roadian HTX2, a premium all-weather tire for light trucks and SUVs. If “all-weather” is a new term for you, all-weather tires are designed to split the difference between all-season and winter tires, with more aggressive traction that makes them more capable in winter weather. In other words, they’re similar to an all-season design except with enhanced traction in snow and slush. The Roadian HTX2 has a solid 9.1 SimpleScore for traction, thanks to its wide grooves, open shoulders, and large, angled tread blocks with an advanced sipe pattern (earning it the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service). The Roadian HTX2’s all-weather rubber compound is also designed for long service, backed by a 70,000 mile warranty, and earning a SimpleScore of 9.9 for longevity. Road manners, cornering, and steering response are all direct and confident thanks to the shoulder design and internal construction of this tire, for a SimpleScore of 9.3 for handling.
While these are the best Dodge Nitro tires on the market, there are plenty of other options to consider.
4. Nexen N’Priz AH8 - Great All-Season Tire
The Nexen N’Priz AH8 is a performance-oriented all-season tire that comes in at an affordable price point, making it a great pick for a Dodge Nitro. Nexen designed the N’Priz AH8 with a wear-resistant silica-enhanced rubber formulation and extra tread depth, which were enough for Nexen to offer a 70,000 mile tread life warranty – and enough for us to give the N’Priz AH8 a SimpleScore of 9.6 for longevity. An extra-deep tread, along with an all-season tread design and a dense network of sipes, are enough for a SimpleScore of 8.4 for traction. Cornering, braking, steering response, control, and road manners are all outstanding, thanks to stable internal construction, the stickier silica-rich tread formulation, and tread design. For such immediate, precise handling, we noted a SimpleScore of 8.8.
