Next up is a tire that can offer the best of both worlds – the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 PLUS. The ExtremeContact DWS06 PLUS gives you the versatility of an all-season tire that can get you through all kinds of weather conditions year-round but can deliver UHP levels of traction, cornering, braking, steering response, and overall handling. That by itself sets the ExtremeContact DWS06 PLUS apart from most UHP tires that have to be swapped for all-season tires in colder weather as the softer tread compound hardens in the cold. The ExtremeContact DWS06 PLUS is an improvement over the proven ExtremeContact DWS06 in just about every aspect, with cornering ability, braking, and steering response that are boosted by reinforced 2-ply sidewalls and macroblocks in the tread. That was enough for us to calculate an incredible SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling. You can also count on this tire for long life and great wet-weather traction, with its silica-rich rubber compound, sweeping lateral grooves, circumferential grooves, and X-sipes for rainy or light wintry conditions, all of which allowed us to award the tire a 9.8 traction score. Longevity is another strong point as the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus is covered by a 60,000 mile warranty and achieved a long-lasting score of 9.2.
3. Falken Azenis FK460 A/S: Great UHP All-Season tire
Here’s a tire we’ve been consistently impressed with for some time, along with pretty much everything else from the Falken brand. The Falken Azenis FK460 A/S has outstanding grip in wet or dry weather thanks to an advanced 4D Nano rubber compound, circumferential grooves with chamfered edges, Emerging Grooves that expand for extended performance as the tire wears down, and Canyon Groove Tech for improved grip in wet or wintry conditions for a traction score of 8.6. That 4D Nano tread formulation also helps deliver a 50,000 mile warranty, for a SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity. Steering response, cornering, road manners, and braking performance are all strong enough to warrant a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling. We’d also like to point out that the Azenis FK460 A/S is quiet and well-mannered on the highway, with grooves that are acoustically tuned to reduce wind noise and cancel certain frequencies to keep road noise to a minimum.
4. Toyo Proxes Sport: Good UHP tire
At SimpleTire, we’ve been impressed with Toyo tires in general for some time, and the Proxes Sport A/S is no exception. You can depend on the Proxes Sport from Toyo for all-season, year-round performance that comes with accurate, responsive steering, short braking distances, and great cornering ability. Traction on wet or dry pavement is outstanding, with a system of angled grooves and circumferential grooves for a SimpleScore of 8.9. Handling is another distinct plus with this tire, with its silica-rich tread compound, specialized rib design, and a contact patch that’s optimized to put the most rubber in contact with the road, which allowed us to award the tire a 9.1 in handling. The Toyo Proxes Sport is covered by a 40,000 mile warranty, enough for us to give it a SimpleScore of 8.3 for longevity.
