Tire Buying Guides
In the last 20 years or so, light trucks and SUVs have taken over American highways as daily drivers and family vehicles. To a large extent, they’ve replaced sedans, minivans and station wagons as the vehicles of choice for families, with a lot of the same amenities and comfort options that you’d find on a luxury car from a generation ago. Many of those light trucks and SUVs are equipped with four-wheel-drive, of course, and for anyone with a 4WD vehicle who wants to get the most out of its performance potential, all-terrain tires are going to be the way to go.
There are a lot of tires to choose from in the all-terrain category at every price point, from top-dollar premium tires down to budget tires from less well-known brands. A great part about the proliferation of brands in today’s all-terrain tire market is that many of the emerging brands with affordable tires now offer performance and value that easily rival some of the best tires out there and give them a real run for their money. That definitely applies to the GT Radial Adventuro family of all-terrain tires; they’re loaded with cutting-edge features and excellent materials and construction, making them top contenders for drivers of light trucks, Jeeps and SUVs everywhere. GT Radial tires are manufactured by Giti, a Singapore-based tire maker with more than 25 years in the business and a global reach, with a growing dealer and distribution network. Let’s see what the GT Radial Adventuro family of tires has to offer:
GT Radial’s Adventuro ATX is a tough and versatile all-terrain tire that’s designed for a perfect balance of off-road performance and durability with on-pavement road manners, handling, low noise and ride quality. The Adventuro ATX’s aggressive all-terrain tread features innovative stairstep grooves with a high initial tread depth for long wear and dependable traction. Zigzag grooves and a dense network of sipes multiply the tread’s surface area and traction with hundreds of thin slits that chew through snow and slush, earning it the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service. Its cut-and-chip resistant tread compound is designed for long, durable service and the GT Radial Adventuro ATX is covered by a 50,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty. On the highway, the tread pitch of the Adventuro ATX is randomized and computer-tuned to negate certain frequencies and overtones, keeping road noise to a minimum. Select sizes of the GT Radial Adventuro ATX feature an outlined white letter sidewall that looks great on a wide variety of trucks and SUVs.
Highway-terrain tires for light trucks are designed much the same as all-season or Grand Touring tires for cars and crossovers, but with beefed-up construction for an enhanced load rating, so they can easily handle the weight of a truck or SUV and be capable of hauling heavy loads or towing trailers. The GT Radial Adventuro HT is designed with many of the same features you’d find on premium all-season tires: circumferential grooves with chamfered edges to efficiently evacuate water from the tire’s contact patch to resist hydroplaning, and a long-wearing, next-generation tread compound that earns it a best-in-class 65,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty. Road manners and handling are impeccable, thanks to a continuous center rib that gives the Adventuro HT solid straight-line tracking and quick steering response. The Adventuro HT is available with an outlined white letter sidewall on select sizes, or can be mounted with the black letter sidewall facing out.
The GT Adventuro AT3 is another great value and great performer in the world of all-terrain tires. It is designed with a damage-resistant tread compound that can stand up to long miles on the highway (with a 50,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty) or rough treatment off the pavement. Its aggressive all-terrain tread features chunky tread blocks and shoulder blocks with a combination of wide zigzag and circumferential grooves that efficiently whisk water away from the tire’s contact patch to resist hydroplaning. The grooves’ design and chamfered edges quickly rid the tread of mud and debris in difficult off-road situations, ensuring there’s always a clear section of tread to dig in for traction as the wheel turns. Tread elements in the Adventuro AT3’s center blocks are designed to interlock with each other on the highway, helping to ensure great straight-line stability and rad manners. Its five-pitch tread design is tuned to keep road noise low, and the Adventuro AT3 is available with a great-looking outlined white letter sidewall for select sizes.
